A couples IVF journey through primary infertility

Mrs. BL (40 years) and Mr. NN (43 years) from Canada were married for 10 years and had been trying to conceive for 6 years. Mrs. BL had a history of bilateral tubal block. Her tube was clipped via operative lapro-hysterscopy. After the lapro-hysterscopy procedure, the couple decided to go for IVF treatment in Canada. Unfortunately, the 1st cycle was a failure.

Consultation at Nova IVF Fertility

The couple came over to Nova IVF Fertility centre in Mumbai after hearing about it from their friends in Mumbai.

As Mrs. BL was already in her early 40s, the couple was advised:

  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) cycle – ICSI involves injecting the sperm cell directly into the mature egg retrieved through ovum pick up procedure after hormonal stimulation
  • Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) – PGT was important due to the patients advanced age, and this testing helps to identify any genetic defects in the embryos.
  • Hysteroscopy – BL had a history of 1 IVF failure and sonography showed irregular endometrium (uterine layer), hence she was advised a hysteroscopy to ensure that there were no other pathologies associated with uterine cavity.
  • Routine tests and investigations were carried out to ensure fitness prior to IVF/ICSI and prior to pregnancy

The successful IVF treatment

IVF cycle was initiated in October 2017. After the ICSI procedure, the doctors used the embryoscope or the special incubator for continuous monitoring of embryos to monitor the embryo growth and PGT was carried out on 4 embryos. The PGT report showed 1 embryo to be normal, and this embryo was selected for the transfer. The embryo transfer was successful and resulted in a full-term pregnancy. In 2018, the couple welcomed a healthy baby.

When couple is diagnosed with primary infertility with bilateral tubal block at an advanced age and failed IVF procedures, it is important to examine the patient first before recommending treatments. If the age factor has a major role to play, a screening must be done to ensure that the embryos do not have any abnormalities.
