Peyronie's disease is a condition wherein a mild to severe bend or curvature is found in an erect penis. This can badly affect one's sexual life as he may have severe or dull pain during sexual intercourse. Some men even experience erectile dysfunction due the stress and anxiety caused by this disease.
Men with Peyronie's disease feel embarrassed and uncomfortable to talk about their symptoms. But they must understand that they are not alone and around 3% to 9% of the men are affected by this condition.
Signs and symptoms of Peyronie's disease develop gradually in some cases, while in others even overnight. Given below are the some of the most common Peyronie's disease symptoms:
Penile pain can be experienced either during erection or while intercourse. Some may experience pain even when the penis is flaccid. In some cases, during the course of time, the pain subsides while other symptoms persist.
Bend or Curvature of the Penis
A bent or curved penis is one of the common Peyronie's symptoms. Unusual angulation of the penile shaft, usually seen when the penis is either erect or flaccid.
Scar Tissues or Plaques
Due to the accumulation of the scar tissues, hard and flat lumps or a band of hard tissues can be felt or seen on one or both sides of the penis.
Narrowing, Shortening or Indentation of the Penis
The scar formation results in loss of elasticity of the penis. This leads to scar contraction in which the scar gradually pulls the tissue and shortens the penis over the time. Some develop an indentation in the penile shaft. Indentation happens usually at the site of the plaque which gives the penis an hour-glass deformity
Men with Peyronie's disease may also find it difficult to get or maintain an erection. This can be due to the loss of rigidity and a bent penis. In some cases, it could be due to the anxiety and stress caused by this condition.
