Sperm Morphology
A normal sperm cell has an oval-shaped head, which contains the genetic information It also has a cap, a neck, a mid-piece, and a tail. The sperm cell of someone who has Teratospermia could have a defective head, no acrosome (cap), or problems with the neck, mid-section, and/or tail. Sometimes, the cell can have double heads or double tails.
Symptoms of Teratospermia
An abnormally-shaped sperm won't be able to transport through the cervix or won't be able to fertilise the egg, thereby causing difficulty in conception.
Causes of teratospermia
- Infections in the semen
- Problems with the testes
- High fever
- Smoking, drinking, and use of drugs
- Exposure to toxins
- Poor diet
- Obesity
- Exposure to heat (laptops, cell phones, saunas, etc.)
- Exposure to environmental factors (pesticides, heavy metals, etc.)
- Varicocele
- Coeliac disease
- Hodgkin's disease
- Crohn's disease
- Genetic
- Unknown
