Infertility is a condition that often leaves a couple in a frustrated state of mind. There can be a number of reasons behind a couple suffering from this condition. If it's a case of male infertility, semen often plays a role in the whole matter, and particularly semen quantity. Yes, that's true. Semen volume is connected to male infertility. We tell you all about how decrease in semen volume is related to male infertility.

What is Hypospermia?

Hypospermia is the term that is used to indicate a decrease in semen volume produced by a man. When a man produces less than 1.5 ml of semen in one ejaculation, it means he is suffering from hypospermia.

Symptoms of Hypospermia

There are no particular symptoms of hypospermia. The only way to notice it is to keep an eye during ejaculation. If it's a case of low volume production for a single day, it doesn't indicate hypospermia. But if production of a low volume of semen continues for a number of days, it hints towards hypospermia.

Causes of Hypospermia

There are a number of factors that can be the cause of hypospermia, such as:

  • Blockage in the ejaculatory duct or seminal vesicle
  • Hormonal abnormalities
  • Retrograde ejaculation
  • Different types of infections

Impact of Hypospermia on Male Fertility

When a man suffers from hypospermia, the flow of semen gets blocked due to an impediment in the ejaculatory ducts or the semen starts to make its way towards the bladder instead of flowing forward. As a result, a low volume of semen is ejaculated during intercourse. Since the amount of semen is low, it contains a low amount of sperm as well. The result is that the chance of the sperm reaching the egg in the female body is minimised.

One thing to note is that low semen volume, in itself, isn't the cause of infertility in males. But when it is combined with low sperm count, it can have a big negative impact on male fertility. In other words, a decrease in semen volume makes way for male infertility.

You may not find a specific treatment to deal with the issue of hypospermia, but you can definitely improve the condition and your chances of fertility by following a few dietary and lifestyle changes, as prescribed by a certified medical practitioner.
