Oligospermia is a condition that leads to male infertility. It is characterised by a low sperm count, while other aspects of sexual health usually remain normal and typical. The ability to maintain an erection and produce an ejaculation will not be affected by oligospermia. A man, who has a sperm count that falls below the 15 million sperm per millilitre average, is classified to have a low sperm count and diagnosed with oligospermia.

Classification and Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Oligospermia is based on the semen analysis done on two occasions. For many decades, people with a sperm count below 20 million per millilitre were diagnosed to be oligospermic. However, the World Health Organization has recently reduced the number to 15 million per millilitre.

Based on the sperm count value, oligospermia can be classified as mild, moderate or severe. An individual with a sperm count that ranges between 10 to 15 million per one millilitre is said to have mild oligospermia, while an individual who has his sperm count in the range or 5 to 10 million is classified to be moderately oligospermic.

Severe oligospermia is a condition where the sperm count per millilitre falls between zero and five million. The sperm concentration can fluctuate in different periods of life and hence the oligospermia can be temporary as well.

Causes of Oligospermia

Oligospermia can occur due to several conditions. An enlarged varicocele, Infections, ejaculation issues, or hormone imbalance are some of the physical factors that can lead to this condition.

Certain lifestyle factors or habits can also increase the risk of oligospermia in a man. Lifestyle factors that contribute to oligospermia include working on the laptop for prolonged periods, causing the testicles to overheat and produce a lower number of sperm cells. Other factors can be being overweight, usage of drugs as well as smoking. Exposure to harmful chemicals and metals can also contribute to sperm count reduction and eventually resulting in oligospermia.
